We attended the Listening & Speaking Workshop as a family of four. Honestly, I was not sure what to expect — I thought it might feel awkward to practise speaking with each other in front of someone else. It did feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but the facilitator was patient and the prompts helped. We have used the guide at home a few times since, and it does help to have something concrete to refer back to when a conversation gets tense.

The Records & Planning Session was very practical. My father and I had been putting off sorting through his paperwork for over a year — it kept feeling like too large a task to start. The session gave us a structure and someone to sit with us while we did it. The folder we built is still on his desk. I appreciated that when we had questions about what to do with certain documents, they pointed us to a solicitor rather than answering things they were not qualified to answer.

I found Amberkith through a friend who had done the Continuity Programme the year before. We did the same, and I think the multi-session format was the right choice for us — the communication habits built over several weeks rather than in one session, which made them feel more natural by the end. The follow-up check-ins were shorter than I expected, but they served their purpose.

We came with a lot of questions that they were not able to answer — questions about what we should do with our parents' property, and some financial matters. They were clear about that upfront, which I appreciated even if it was a little disappointing. What they were able to help with — how to structure conversations and how to organise the documents we did have — was useful and done carefully.

I attended the Listening & Speaking Workshop alone, to see if it would be worth bringing the rest of the family. It was. I went back two months later with my siblings and our mother. The facilitator remembered the context from my initial attendance, which made the family session feel more personal. The take-home guide has become something of a reference point for us when conversations get difficult.

The Records & Planning Session helped us identify quite a few gaps — documents we realised we did not have and had not thought to look for. The checklist was more thorough than I expected. Having a labelled folder to bring to our solicitor later made that appointment go much faster. I would have liked a slightly longer session to work through everything at once rather than leaving some items for us to do at home.

Case Studies
Detailed family journeys
These accounts describe the fuller arc of working with Amberkith, from what prompted the family to get in touch to what changed as a result.
Case Study — Listening & Speaking Workshop
A family with three adult siblings managing different expectations about a family home
Challenge
Three adult siblings had been struggling to discuss their elderly parents' home without conversations becoming tense. Each had a different idea of what should happen, and conversations regularly ended without resolution. They came to Amberkith not to resolve the property question — which is outside our scope — but to improve how they talked to each other about it.
What We Did
We ran a Listening & Speaking Workshop with all three siblings. The facilitator used structured prompts to help each person express their position without interruption, and then guided the group in reflecting back what they had heard. At the end of the session, each person had a copy of the take-home guide. We also provided written signposting to property solicitors in Penang.
Outcome
The family reported that the following conversation they had — roughly two weeks after the session — went differently. One sibling noted that they were able to finish a full discussion without anyone leaving the room. The property question remained unresolved, but the family was better positioned to approach it through the solicitor we had referred them to. Timeline: single session, feedback received at six weeks.
"We came in three different directions. We did not leave agreed, but we left knowing how to keep trying." — Chin Wei, eldest sibling
Case Study — Family Records & Planning Session
A single parent preparing a clearer picture of family records ahead of a planned move
Challenge
A single parent planning to relocate from Penang to Kuala Lumpur with two children realised they had no clear picture of their own everyday documents — insurance, school records, medical history, household contacts. They had not organised them in one place and were not sure what they even held.
What We Did
We ran a Records & Planning Session, beginning with the pre-session checklist to identify what to bring. During the session, we worked through the documents category by category, labelling and placing them into the folder. The planning template was completed with emergency contacts, school information, and a list of items to follow up. We noted two areas — a lapsed insurance policy and a question about school enrollment — as matters to raise with the relevant institutions directly.
Outcome
The client reported using the folder actively during the move, and said having it organised in advance made a significant difference to how the relocation period felt. The checklist identified four gaps they had not been aware of. Timeline: single session plus two weeks of follow-up actions by the client. Feedback at eight weeks.
"I had never seen everything in one place before. It sounds simple, but having a labelled folder made the move feel much less uncertain." — Fauziah, George Town
